Is violence especially discouraged during Ramadan?
I've heard people talk about Ramadan as a month that's meant to be peaceful, but I'm worried that they may be Christians who think that if Christmas is supposed to be peaceful, then the same must be true about Ramadan.
I tried looking at the "religious practices" and "crime" sections of Wikipedia's Ramadan article, but couldn't find anything.
Also, are individuals deciding to engage in, or exhorting others to engage in, lesser jihad specifically during Ramadan a modern phenomenon, or did it happen in historical times?

Salamualaikum. Let me first clear the air by saying I'm in no way shape or form supporting rape, but all I want is clarification. My question is if an inappropriately dressed woman goes out late in the night for no reasonable purpose and gets raped, doesn't she share a part of the blame, however small, for tempting the rapist? Remember, not only did she dress inappropriately, she also went out late in the night for no good reason. This question is as a result of the fact that many women even Muslim women want to hide under the cover of "**the victim is never at fault**" and dress inappropriately. I'm not even in support of this mantra because in **some cases** I believe the victim takes a part of the blame. I know Islam doesn't support rape but it also frowns at indecent dressing from both men and women!

Abusive spouse in dunya, relationship in the akhira?

From what I understand, it seems to be a pretty mainstream (if not consensus) opinion that married couples where both parties go to paradise will be married in paradise as well (see e.g. [When a woman's husband dies and she remarries, which husband will she be with in Jannah?](https://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/43532/when-a-womans-husband-dies-and-she-remarries-which-husband-will-she-be-with-in) - the answer seems to be "the last one she married").
Now as far as I can tell, there is doctrinal consensus that all people who die as Muslims will go to paradise eventually (though historically, a few now-considered-heretical sects like the Mutazilites may have thought you could end up getting tortured in hell for eternity for grievous sins).
Together, these two statements imply that if two people who were married and both died as Muslims, then they will be together in paradise forever.
**Question:** Do things like spousal abuse change the doctrinal position here? Say a husband abused his wife all her life, but they both died as Muslims - does she get a say of "I don't want that man" in paradise?

If Jesus was regarded by the Islamic prophet as a true prophet, why didn't he obey him? Why did he contradict him and do the very opposite of what he taught?

If a Muslim woman were beaten by her husband who believes his actions are Sharia compliant, how can she rectify the situation?

M. Arnez, *Empowering women through Islam: Fatayat NU between tradition and change*, J. Islamic Studies, 2010 (doi ), writes:
> [Indonesian women's organization] Fatayat NU strongly moves against a gender-biased interpretation of Islamic sources ... As several interviewees have pointed out, these 'biased interpretations' are one reason why **women, who seek counsel from counsellors of Fatayat NU, often simply accept being beaten by their husbands, considering their inferior position to men as something given by God**.
This does not seem what Allah has intended.
Qur'an 4:34 seems to give husbands a considerable degree of power over their wives, up to and including beating them in some form. While there's a whole bunch of fine print , it's unclear (a) whether the Muslim spouses would even be aware of the fine print, and (b) whether a husband who's in the mindset "I need to beat my wife now" is capable of conducting his beating in a restricted and controlled way.
Suppose a husband beats his wife and and believes his actions are Sharia compliant; he may or may not be correct in his belief. I'm wondering what actions the wife can take.
**Question**: If a Muslim woman were beaten by her husband who believes his actions are Sharia compliant, how can she rectify the situation?
I'm interested in what actions she can take to stop this from happening. E.g., divorce (talaq), contacting an imam or social worker, engaging in self-defence, acting less rebellious (i.e., do whatever her husband tells her to do).
If it happened to me, I'd want to just disappear. I have no desire to spend my life wondering if today's a day I'm going to be beaten; if next time it will remain Sharia compliant; etc.

For context: I am not a Muslim.
In the wake of the most recent terrorist attacks in Paris, I would like once again to ask the question: "Does Islam promote violence?" I realize this question has been asked before, but I have a specific way of asking it:
It seems obvious that it's false to say Islam DOES promote violence in ALL self-proclaimed Muslims. It seems equally false to say that Islam DOES NOT promote violence in ALL self-proclaimed Muslims.
When people who call themselves Muslim kill innocent people while shouting words from the Koran and in the name of Allah, it's pretty clear that for THESE people, their beliefs in Islam promote and result in violence.
Now whether or not their interpretation of the Koran is "correct", or if they are "true" Muslims, well that's another question. That is the question I'm trying to answer today by understanding how non-violent Muslims interpret the violent parts of the Koran.
For example, there are many troubling versus in the Koran that do, in fact, seem to promote violence, especially against non-believers. How do non-violent Muslims explain these verses? Is it an issue of translation? Is it an issue of cherry-picking which parts of the Koran to follow and which to exclude? For example, the Bible clearly states that being gay is a sin. However, there are many Christians who welcome the gay community into the church and will even perform marriage for these couples. This is a contradiction that requires thought to reconcile. So, how do "true" non-violent Muslims reconcile these contradictions regarding the violent verses of the Koran?
Here are some examples:
> Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with
> terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have
> anyone to help."
>
> Quran (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who
> disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every
> fingertip of them"
>
> Quran (9:5) - "So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay
> the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive and
> besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they
> repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free
> to them."
>
> Quran (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day,
> nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His
> Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are)
> of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing
> submission, and feel themselves subdued."
>
> Quran (9:73) - "O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the
> hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and
> evil is the destination."
>
> Quran (17:16) - "And when We wish to destroy a town, We send Our
> commandment to the people of it who lead easy lives, but they
> transgress therein; thus the word proves true against it, so We
> destroy it with utter destruction."

> There is no justification for the taking of innocent lives. The sanctity of human life is guaranteed in Islam.
What, if any, is the definition of an "innocent life", and the taking of an innocent life?
For example, which of the following counts as innocent lives?
- Someone who is currently trying to kill someone.
- Someone who has committed murder for no good reason.
- Someone who has had homosexual sex.
- Someone who has unsuccessfully attempted to smuggle a large amount of illegal narcotic drugs from one country to another.
- A woman or man who has harmed the namus (ناموس, honor) of her or his family.
- Someone who has paid taxes to the wrong government.
