Can sadaqah and lillah count towards missed zakah payments?

Can I use the the sadaqah and lillah I paid during those years to count towards the zakah I owe for the previous years? I would appreciate an answer that conforms to the Hanafi madhhab.

At what age does a person become an adult in Islam?

From Hidaya Foundation : > The person should be Muslim, **adult**, sane, free (not a slave). > They must posses a certain minimum amount of extra wealth (called nisab), fully owned by them in excess of personal use (such as clothing, food, shelter, household furniture, utensils, cars, etc). > They should have had this minimum amount in possession for a complete lunar year (hawl). The wealth should be of a productive nature, from which they can derive profit or benefit such as merchandise for business, gold, silver, livestock, etc. > The minimum amount (or Nisab) should not be owed to someone, i.e., it should be free from debt. The above states that a Muslim has **to be an adult** to give zakat. **Question:** At what age does a person become an adult in Islam? What **specific age in Sharia law** does a person **become an adult** so they are **obligated to give zakat**? *(Please include evidence from Qu'ran or Ahadith)*

For instance, say that a community wants to tend to people who would be wayfarers, such as typically young students who often need hostels, who tend to not have access to that many resources even back home, let alone on the road, often going for educational or other benevolent purposes. Would spending some of the zakat money meant for wayfarers on a project like this to build a hostel and maintain it be a good use of zakat? Or a similar idea, if someone wanted to make a program similar to Medicaid, used by lower class people for medical access, would zakat money spent on the entire program as opposed to individually funding a poor person's medical bills be a good thing, intending to use advantages of a collective program like economies of scale and the strength of centralized negotiation with suppliers in procurement?

I have a family member whose daughter’s wedding is coming up, and the cost is around 1-2 million. He works as a three-wheel driver for hire, and his son is a salesman in a shop. They live in their own house, but it is not well furnished. Since wedding expenses can be overwhelming, I am wondering if he qualifies for Zakat under the category of Al-Gharimin (those in debt). Would he be eligible for Zakat if he struggles to cover the wedding expenses? Or does having a stable income and a house disqualify him? I would appreciate insights based on Islamic teachings.

I live in canada. Traditionally ourfamily had very strong economics but in the past few years we have struggled. With 4 kids, a house morgage of 8k per month and living expenses of 6 to 7 thousand. Which we can not afford due to recently moving here and losing our business main source of income. Even after working nearly 12 hr per day the expenses have to be paid out of savings which has been used for years now due to being previously very well off.there is some gold jewllery but that is not investment it is just for wear. So to summarize do we have to pay zakat like if we are really struggling to make ends meet. We do not have generational wealth but like enough to last us for a bit of time to help stabalize.hope is to use it to later make a steady income stream. Have huge liabilities and have kids who are going to an age where they will have a lot of needs. Cant manage to spend time with them due to 12 to 15 hr work day. Thanks for your replies.

Is it allowed for my father to pay my zakat for me? I calculated my zakat for this year, and when I recently visited, I asked him to give the money to my mother to donate (she knows some charities that she can give the money to). He said, keep the money and he'll give her the same amount on my behalf... as a gift. So basically just decided to pay my zakat. Is this allowed? Obviously, I can afford to pay my own zakat (because everyone can pay their own zakat). But also obviously, parents are allowed to gift money to their children. Thank you

I would like to know if the below information is true or not. I have heard this from one of my friend and she claims that she has got this info from reliable sources like Peace TV, well known and qualified Mufti's etc. **The information is:** Suppose a person has debts and the debt amount has exceeded the minimum Nisab amount. As his net amount was negative, the person did not give Zakaat in Year 1. However, he was able to clear off his debts up to considerate amount in Year 2 and he has savings on which Zakaat becomes obligatory. Hence, he gives Zakaat on the savings in Year 2. But, according to my friend, this person needs to give the Zakaat from Year 1 as well in Year 2. Since he was not able to give Zakaat in Year 1 due to his debts, he needs to give Year 1's zakaat in Year 2. If he is not in a state to give the whole amount at once, he can distribute the money all over the year and pay off monthly/quarterly/whenever he can. BUT, still it is obligatory to pay off Year 1's Zakaat whether or not you are in debt. Summary is, After you clear off the debts, you need to give the previous year's Zakaats as well. Hope I am not confusing you with the content. I would like to know if this information is correct.

I’m obliged to pay zakat this year as I am now earning. I had decided to give the money to someone who took care of my mother before she passed and now this person is seriously ill and is in hospital with a massive bill to pay. She is poor and doesn’t have much money. My husband is now telling me that I shouldn’t be giving the majority of my zakat to my fathers side as I am no longer a daughter of that family but a daughter of my in laws. They are saying that they have poor people that were relying on my zakat. I just wanted to asked is it obligatory for me to prioritise my zakat to my in laws over the lady who helped my mother. I tried to explain to my husband that it’s my zakat and I can choose who it goes to. Please can someone let me know if I am wrong.

Sometimes we get a receipt for whatever donation we do. It can be reimbursed when filing our tax returns. If I give zakat and get a receipt and claim it in the tax return, is it OK to do so? Also can i use the claimed Zakat for my personal use? For example: I am due to pay Zakat of $500. Now if i claim this $500 in my tax return, i will get them reimbursed. Now lets say my total tax refund was $800. Now out of this $800, i know that $500 are the one that i claimed for Zakat. Now if i want to buy something worth $800 for myself, lets say TV or Refrigerator, can i do that?
