I am aware that transgender identity is considered haram in Islam. However, some people choose to worship Allah but may struggle to fully submit to His wishes, resulting in compromises. In Islam, mixing genders is haram, and one shouldn't have friends of the opposite gender. So, should a transgender woman have female friends or male friends? I’m curious because of a story I heard in which Muhammad ﷺ forbade his wives from having contact with a feminine man because he sensed lust in his behavior and words. This implies that the rules about who can befriend whom are tied to sexual preferences rather than biological sex.

Is there a relationship between the word "hijra" (migration of Muhammad) and "hijra" (South Asian term for transgender people)?

The word "hijra" is an Urdu word derived from the Semitic Arabic root hjr in its sense of "leaving one's tribe," and has been borrowed into Hindi. -- Wikipedia Given the fact that the second version of "hijra" is Urdu, which has many similarities with Arabic, and it seems to have a related original meaning, it seems plausible there's a link between the two usages. **Question**: Is there a relationship between the word "hijra" (migration of Muhammad) and "hijra" (South Asian term for transgender people)?

Is it lawful for Muslims to prohibit LGBT people from getting an education?

Our college made a policy recently which can be summed up like this: you have to sign a paper that says that you will be dropped out without questions if you are not free from LGBT. This is total restriction over LGBT, not LGBT sexual acts on campus or something like that. If found out (before or after graduation) the college administration will lawfully kick you out or revoke you. It shocked LGBT communities in my country because there was no such policy required before. The majority of my friends are under the assumption that it is a Muslim mission to prevent LGBT spreading given the opportunities (even by prohibiting their education). I don't know either. I don't even know if this question will be black and white amongst Muslims. Being an atheist, I solemnly believe that being LGBT should not be a reason for someone not getting an education. Our state's constitution embeds the right of education to people, not be seen for what they are. But it gets tricky when our college can have a policy on their own regarding this case. Is it lawful (in Islamic practices) for Muslims to prohibit LGBT people from getting an education? Does Islam has specific laws about this? If it is not, are Muslims required to do this?

I’m a female & I wanted to be a boy my whole life. As far as I can remember i used to wear my brothers pants and shirts since i was 4. I’ve always seen myself as a guy. I’ve read and heard that transgender or homosexuality is something you choose for yourself. But how can I choose that at the age of 4? Am I born to go to hell? It’s really depressing me. Will I get punished for being like this? If I become a man through the surgery will allah accept me? I’ve also heard that even though I become a man through that surgery I will still be a female. Is that true? ( sorry for my english)

as-salamu alaykum I have a small page (600 followers) on a social platform, it is for people to send in friend applications so whoever is interested in becoming their friend to text them (I don’t allow relationship posts). My main posts start with the persons pronouns and I have bumped into many people who use he/him or she/her even though the person who’s a female uses he/him and male likewise (sometimes transgenders as well) or they/them. At some point I started feeling like something feels wrong but still respect their pronouns and put it up. Is it wrong to own such an account of helping people find friends and if I can’t call a female by he/him pronouns? wʿalaykumu as-salām

Hi I am 27 years old man and I recently found out that the unstoppable urge that I felt since I was a kid is called [Transsexuality](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transsexual) . Now my question is, why is sex change forbidden for Sunni Muslims while it is allowed in Shi'a Islam? Also there is no specific mention of transsexuality in Quran but by simple logic of "there is cure for every disease" can sex change be justified? It would be great if they get answers from experts. References are appreciated.

According to scholars who view transgenderism as haram, what should a post-operative transsexual do?

There's a difference of opinion as to whether being transgender is haram; see my answer here . An example fatwa which says it's haram is: > We know, therefore, that these operations are prohibited and that no one from among the scholars whose opinion is considered permits them, save with the exception mentioned in the council's response. -- Dr. Hatem al-Haj , Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) (Fatwa 22813 , 2007) Some transgender people undergo sex reassignment surgery , where the reproductive organs of an individual are surgically altered to be (more) consistent with their gender. It's not considered a reversible operation, e.g., vaginoplasty includes amputation of the penis and testes. Suppose a post-operative transsexual accepts such fatawa and thinks they've made a mistake and wants to correct it. I'm wondering how they would go about making amends. **Question**: According to scholars who view transgenderism as haram, what should a post-operative transsexual do? Ordinarily, by the time they get to the point of surgery, transgender individuals will have established themselves as their identified gender, and have probably undergone many other medical procedures. They do this because they genuinely believe they are of the gender they identify with. It may be that these scholars suggest to reverse all this to the greatest possible extent. Or perhaps the impracticality and reduction in quality of life makes it recommended to stick with the identified gender.

I'm 21 years old and transgender, and I've experienced it from my childhood. People says that transsexuals are prohibited in Islam, but I feel it is totally wrong. They think like we are trying to become the opposite gender just for silly desire. I went for counselling, but it was useless. **Question**: Does transitioning from male to female go against Islam? I know "Rasoolullah hates the people who wear the cloths of the opposite gender". I know "Islam prohibits men to wear gold and silk". But anyhow, I don't see myself as a man. I know Allah will never make a mistake. Therefore I am saying that it is not a mistake. It is just like a test. If one man is blind, we'll never say like "god made a mistake". As the same, he made us too with some disabilities. And changing God's creation is wrong in Islam. But if a baby born with an extra hand, the doctors will try to remove the extra hand. Do we say it is like changing the god's creation? No!

I am a transsexual woman and I am getting bullied for being transsexual by other Muslims. But Islam is a religion I love and cherish, and I always loved reading the Quran in my free time. A few days ago, I finally decided to start praying. I cant stop being transsexual as i was diagnosed with a mental illness and take pills because I can't be happy in male body. How can I carry on living a pure Muslim life while being transsexual? I do not hate Allah for being like this; it is not his fault.

Is deliberately misgendering a transgender person a form of backbiting?
[Misgendering][1] refers to using gendered/nongendered pronouns (he, she, they, [xe][2], [e][3], etc.) to refer to someone who would prefer you to use other pronouns, e.g., referring to a woman using the masculine pronoun "he". Misgendering refers to using gendered/nongendered pronouns (he, she, they, xe , e , etc.) to refer to someone who would prefer you to use other pronouns, e.g., referring to a woman using the masculine pronoun "he". Misgendering transgender people might be done accidentally, or may be done deliberately to assert a rejection of their gender identity. When done deliberately, transgender people ordinarily consider this deeply disrespectful and insulting. I'm wondering if this would be classified as *backbiting* which is forbidden in Qur'an 49:12 "...And do not spy or backbite each other..." (and Qur'an 104 ), or if it would be classified as something else, like *slandering*, or something I haven't thought of. **Question**: Is deliberately misgendering a transgender person a form of backbiting? There's this hadith: > ... Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like. It was said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander. -- Sahih Muslim 2589 (sunnah.com ) But I'm not sure how to apply it. The part "...in a manner which he does not like" certainly applies, but the second part "If (that failing) is actually found..." doesn't seem to apply here. ---- Here's a circumstance where an appropriate answer to this question would be required: 1. Someone deliberately misgenders someone I know. I have transgender friends, and not everyone's familiar with transgender-related matters, so this is plausible. 2. I explain to them that it's backbiting, which is forbidden, with the intention of forbidding what is evil (Qur'an 3:104 ). However, since it's impermissible to talk without knowledge (Qur'an 17:36 ), nor may I declare something haram which is halal (Qur'an 10:59 ), I better be 100% certain that it is actually backbiting before saying it's backbiting.

It is my understanding that female humans obeying the muslim religion must (or choose to) hide their hair and sometimes even face from non-family males. However, it is well known today, that 1. the biological sex is not at all binary, meaning that some individuals cannot be clearly identified as either biologically male or female (not even by looking at their genitalia) and 2. the gender identity of a person must not necessarily match their biological sex, meaning a biological male can feel, clothe and appear in a feminine way (or the other way around). How does the previously mentioned rule (if I did not misconceive it) address this circumstance? For example, does a [cis-woman](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisgender) adhering to the tenets of islam, * have to veil herself in the present of a non-family trans-male (a biological woman, with a male gender identity)? * Or would she have to veil herself in the presence of a trans-female (a biological man, with a female gender identity)? Which is particularly problematic, as the person would be almost impossible to identify for the muslim woman. * Or in the presence of a non-gender person without a clear biological sex? * And finally, what about post-surgery trans-persons (i.e. after surgically changing their physiological features and genitalia)? ---- *Note: I don't know the attitude of islam towards its members being trans (that would be a different question), but given that muslim individuals may interact with non-muslims they may still encounter trans-people.*

> Does man think that he will be left alone, unquestioned? Was he not a drop of ejaculated semen, then he became a clot, and then Allah made it into a living body and proportioned its parts, **and then He made of him a pair, male and female?** --- Qur'an 75:36-39 In the top answer to https://islam.stackexchange.com/q/8664/17163 there is the assertion that Qur'an 75:39 implies there's exclusively males and females. However, strictly speaking, it's not a logical consequence on this ayat. If someone made, say, a lock and a key, that doesn't mean there's no other means of securing a door closed that neither involve a lock nor a key. **Question**: Does the Qur'an 75:39 (or another ayat) exclude the possibility of people who are neither male nor female? Yes, Allah made males and females, and the vast majority of people in this world fit comfortably in these categories, and this is probably practically important for the continued existence of man. But did Allah make anything else? Personally, I don't like to ascribe limitations to Allah, so, in general, I tend to have a "He could do that" attitude. In the setting of this question, I also have non-binary and intersex friends.
