Currently I am working on a philosophy paper, exploring the correlation between cause and effect, or in other words how present knowledge is wholly dependent upon past knowledge. I was thinking of applying some reference or explanation based on Islam. Is there anything I can talk about, with respect to the hadiths or maybe something from the Quran with regards to the past and present dependency?

Salaam, Actually I am a little confused I hope someone can assist me. I want to pray Tahajjud but I am confused about the timings. I usually pray Isha after I come home at around 12 Am and I usually go sleep at 2 or 2:30 am. Now I also have to wake up at 5 am for Fajr. So i want to ask can I pray Tahajjud at 2 am when I am about to sleep? Because if i go to sleep at 2 am then it won't be possible for me to wake up again at 3 am to pray Tahajjud. So can I pray Tahajjud at 2 am? Fajr time in my city starts at around 4:20 am.

There were no clocks 1400 years ago, why do we care so much about exact timings of Adhan and prayer, etc time today?

This has been bugging for like a lot lately. back in the day, I mean 14 centuries ago, there were no clocks, etc, people would simply look at the sky and if they felt it was morning or noon or what ever, would say their prayers. But now a days, for example when fasting or breaking ones fast! we are meticulous about the seconds! and check if the time with extreme measures to see if its time or not!! IMHO this is too much! and we shouldnt realy care this much about time! Why do we care so much and since when has this been like this ? Update: Thanks everyone, some indicated some methods to get a better idea of time, but even with everything you say, looking at shadows, etc, you get a **relative time period** and nothing remotely close to precise timing with a clock down to minutes, and even seconds. More over, at nights(and dawn etc), there was no means to know what time it was, as it is also noted in Quran in one of verses. My point is, it obviously was never a big deal or important matter. The relativeness of time was always intended, since, if God wanted precise timing he would command his messenger to create a clock for his followers! so when he didn't, he must have never intended precise timing!

Is Ramadan the only reason Islam uses lunar calendar?
I was curious why Islam uses the lunar calendar. The solar calendar seems more pragmatic because the same date falls in the same season every year. I was curious why Islam uses the lunar calendar. The solar calendar seems more pragmatic because the same date falls in the same season every year. E.g. thanks to the solar calendar, it is easy to know that January 1, 1786 was winter in Copenhagen. It is much harder to derive the season in different geographic locations based on a lunar date. The only advantage to the lunar calendar I can think of is to diversify the difficulty of the Ramadan fast, to make it easier in some years and harder in others. But are there any other benefits of and reasons why Islam uses it?

If the idea of sending Quran through Muhammad was to replace the previously sent messages because they got corrupted later that means humans did not have the proper message to get guided between the time of the oldest available manuscripts of the New Testament and the Muhammad's time. There were a few centuries between these two and a few generations of people lived and died during this gap. Wasn't god serious about this issue? Is god serious about people having the correct message with them?

Bismillah. Alhamdulillahi rabbil-'alamin. Was-Salatu was-Salam 'ala Ashraful Anbiya Sayyidina Muhammad wa 'ala 'Alihi Muhammad. ---------- **What should I do if on the 29 Shaban the sky is cloudy and I cannot see the Crescent of Shahri Ramadan?** Although this issue has been discussed many times, it remains a matter which troubles most people. And according to my research, the most simple and clear instruction is given by the Imams of Ahlul Bayt. In following Hadith Imam Hussayn is teaching us a lesson for a lifetime, > A'bu Abdullah(asws) said: "Count Shaban as twenty-nine days. So if it > was cloudy, so wake up in the morning Fasting, and if it was clear and > you can look, but you cannot see anything (new moon), so wake up in > the morning not Fasting" (so 30 days of the Month of Shaban). > > Source: Al Kafi – V 4 – The Book of Fasts Ch 6 H 9

(Source ) We are aware that Asr (middle prayer ) is a very important Salah and missing it costs a lot . **So, how has to be the quoted Hadith understood? If we start our prayer before sunset, shall we continue praying even during the sun set?** Jakallahu Khairan.

The **timing of Faj'r here starts from 4:25.The Athan in my area for Faj'r is at 4:45** The **Jama'ah is currently at 5:10.** I wake up at 4:00 and generally take about 15 minutes more or less (actually not less, always more ;_;) to get up, make wudu, clean up, brush my teeth and stuff. **I pray Tahajjud right after that, I start around 4:15-4:20. Since 5 minutes is not enough to complete my Salat ul-Layl, I have to pray it within the Faj'r time.** And then go to the Masjid at 4:55 and pray my Sunnah and Fard prayer of Faj'r there. **Is it okay to do so, I mean can I pray Salat ul-Layl if the Faj'r time starts?** I have read some hadiths and came to know that Salat ul-Layl can be prayed at any time of the night until dawn. It is best to pray in the last third of the night. The start of Faj'r time doesn't indicate the dawn though, right? I am a bit confused whether it is valid or not. Can anyone clarify me on this issue? *Jazak Allahu Khayran.*

Assalamu'Alaikum Fellow Community members, This is my very first question to the community and it's a simple one. Is there a hadith or quranic verse which tells how long one has to wait after sunrise before offering the Fajr prayer? Obviously this is when one has missed the fajr time and woken up right after sunrise time has past. Answers with authentic references will be much appreciated.

Furthermore, does the Islamic Hijri calendar run on a standard 24-hour day just like the Gregorian calendar?

I understand the Islamic day begins at sunset/maghrib (e.g. https://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/24725/if-the-date-changes-with-sunset-why-is-asr-called-the-middle-prayer) . However, it is less clear whether the daily 24 hour clock also begins (i.e. 00:00 (0 hours and 0 minutes)) at this time, as practised by countries or major international organisations which adopt the Islamic calendar. I would be grateful if members here could inform as to the whether it does? And if not (e.g. it starts at the (Gregorian calendar) midnight), why this is the case? That is, the justifications (especially theological/fiqh (vs practical/logistical) for the discrepancy between the accepted theological basis of the start of the day, and the actual practice?. Thank you.

When we start a new day, we usually start it at 12am. But what about in Islam? Does a new day start at Maghrib time or Fajr time? Someone told me it is either one of those times. Is this true? What is a new day or next day considered in Islam?
