I'm a bit curious about the interpretation of the mentioning/honoring of Ibrahim (), especially from the Shi'a and/or Sufi perspective (not excluding other interpretations, but I have no access/knowledge of sources of the named sects) in context of the verses:
- The verse in surat a-Shu'ara where Ibrahim () asks Allah () to give or grant him a good reputation by later generations:
> And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations. (26:84 )
- and the verse from surat as-Saffat where Allah () has "answered" Ibrahim's supplication, saying:
> And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: (37:108 )

Why Ibraheem was referred to as Ummah (أُمَّة) in this verse and why it was translated with other meanings?
My focus here is on the translation of the word Ummah (أُمَّة) in Arabic, by which Allah attributed Ibraheem in verse ([16:120][1]). > إِنَّ إِبْرَهِيمَ كَانَ **أُمَّةً**

- while Pickthall and Dr. Ghali used the word "nation",
- Yusuf Ali used the word "model"
- and Shakir "exemplar".
All these words could certainly fit to describe this prophet (), but
my question is:
What is the actual meaning of this word in this context and why was it used as an attribute of Ibraheem and how -if it actually does- does it differ from it usual meaning?
Which was discussed before in:
- https://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/7570/what-does-ummah-mean-in-islam
Or is there a secret behind calling Ibraheem "ummah"?

He dreamt of sacrificing his son and upon waking he concluded that it was Allah command to sacrifice his son. How did he conclude this? It could have been very much possible that it was a Shaitan dream.
What exactly happened that night in his dream? Please elaborate.

One of my Christian friend and I were discussing about Islam and Christianity. I am not well versed with Prophets and their history. He told me that in the Bible, it is said that the descendants of Ismail (PBUH), first son of Ibrahim (PBUH), will become a great generation and will deviate from the truth. Hence he believes, we are following a different version of Christianity as per the Bible.
He did not tell me the bible verse. May be it is part of the new testament. But I initially thought, Muhammed (PBUH) was not related by blood with other prophets. I did some research and tumbled on this . There are lots of comments there. Some say it is false. Some say it is true. Can any scholar shed some light on this matter?

Did Ibrahim AS find the concept of Allah only with his mind (or in his free will)?

Last night I had a debate with my friend.
It was about story of Ibrahim PBUH. Sura Al-An'am 74-83 http://quran.com/6/74-83
According to my common sense & common language, Quran told us that Ibrahim AS search the concept of worshipping one Allah as creator of everything (monotheism) only with his mind.
Of course after he get it. He would think that Allah has guide his thought to the straight path. But, it doesn't tell that he don't have any his personal thought before came to the conclusion (monotheism).
The complete story from my perspectives are:
1. (Young) Ibrahim AS sensed something wrong with his father idols-worshipping practice. [Al An'am: 74]
2. Then he left his father, went into wilderness. In Allah SWT POV, wilderness (refer to event in 3 following ayat) will make him the people of faith. [Al An'am: 75]
3. Saw star, considering it as lord, then left it as lord because it dissapear [Al An'am: 76]
4. Saw moon, did the same as with star before, but after left moon as lord, realized the need of guidance from lord (might hinted that already had the idea of Allah but might still want the real presence of Allah) [Al An'am: 77]
5. Saw sun, saw it as a bigger one, considering it as lord, then left it and said no longer associate Allah as his people does (might be no longer want the real presence of Allah). [Al An'am: 78]
6. Declare that he only accept the creator of sky (star, moon, sun included) and earth, inclining to the truth, and not (stop) associate others with Allah. [Al An'am: 79]
7. Started preaching what he declare to his people. Allah inspire him the arguments though. [Al An'am: 80-83]
However, my friend didn't agree. Here his points:
1. Ibrahim PBUH is guided by Allah, he wouldn't ever consider to associate Allah, in his whole life. Therefore, he never searched monotheism with his own free will. He just know.
2. Thus, Al An'am: 76-78 was just a debate from him to convince his people.
I can't accept his point because
1. Yes, Ibrahim PBUH is known of the closeness with Allah. But my question is just in a certain phase in his life. Prophet Muhammad PBUH once not a prophet. Hitler once not a fuhrer. Why can't Ibrahim PBUH once not a monotheist (hanif) at least in his searching phase? Or, why can't Ibrahim PBUH search his own concept of God, not 'just know' without free will because of divine knowledge?
2. If Al An'am: 76-78 is a rhetoric debate, it must be shown clearly. Ibrahim PBUH POV or narrator in Quran (Allah) must explicitly say it before or after. Otherwise, it'll make the reader confused. Bad story telling.
3. Again, the debate scenario has very weak probability. Al An'am: 75 says that the wilderness **will show (or make) Ibrahim PBUH** be among the certain. If debate scenario is true, Al An'am: 75 will says the wilderness (realm of heaven and earth) logic at ayat 76-78 is **for his people, not him**.
My friend couldn't reply my objections, so I can't accept his point. My point is contradict with his rule about Ibrahim PBUH and other prophet, so he can't accept mine. So it's a deadlock until now.
Please help us.
*Interesting trivia: there is no this kind of Ibrahim PBUH story in Judaism or Christianity POV.*

Our debate actually connected to another more fundamental question:
Can anyone from a far-deep remote isolated area (not knowing Islam and other major religions), grasp the idea like in the first shahadat, only by using his mind ?
I'm not asking that will she/he become prophet too. Because Muslim can only confirm prophecy stuff from Quran or Hadis. Nor I ask this to know about the condition of people at remote area at afterlife. I'm asking this in a secular way, without any reference to Islamic terminology.

During a most enjoyable speech about the story of Angel Gabriel (YouTube link ), Omar Suleiman talks about the three angels visiting Prophet Abraham on their way to annihilate the people of Prophet Lot. (Beginning at around 47m:55s ) (In Quran the story is briefly mentioned more than once. The most detailed section (to my extremely limited knowledge) is **11:69-77**.)
Omar Suleiman gives a rather detailed account of the story. He barely mentions some sources, but I cannot find them. Where can I find it?
Further, at around 53m:40s , Omar Suleiman mentions that the angels stated: *"Your Lord is Most Wise (al-Hakeem) and Most Knowledgeable (al-Aleem)."* What is interesting is that, as Omar Suleiman also points out, in Quran the order is always the other way round. (Omar Suleiman also gives the reasoning and wisdom behind this reversal of order.) Is this part also included in the sources that I am looking for?

Which is it? I tried to read Qu'ran and it said "the angels".

Why mention the "the way of Abraham?" I thought all the prophets followed the same path. Does this mean, for example, the path of Nuh (AS) is different from Abraham's (AS) path? Nuh (AS) message in the Quran is not different from that of any prophet.

Do we know *exactly why* Prophet Abraham is asking Allah to accept their repentance? (Obviously, one can repent anytime, on any occasion, but Allah must have a reason to narrate us this specific occasion; and it is not that Prophet Abraham and and his son Ishmael did something bad; on the contrary, they have just completed the House of Allah.)

And know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise."
Was this before or after Allah saved him from the fire?
I would like to know this because if it happened after Allah saved him from the fire, then he would've witnessed a miracle first-hand, so why would he need more miracles in order to be satisfied?

I just couldn't wrap it in my head when we have to send salaam (salawat) to prophet Ibrahim (and what is the real intention of doing that?). And in Al-Quran there are so many time mention about him.
> And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. **Al-Baqarah:127**
---
> And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob,

> so do not die except while you are Muslims." **Al-Baqarah:132**
---
> Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allah had given him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death," he said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west." So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. **Al-Baqarah:258**
There are just too many about him in this holy book. I know him as *Khalilullah* but what is so special about him? Because Allah already declared Islam is the favourable deen which is jihaded by our Prophet, Muhammad SAW.
