Does Qur'an 2:241 speak about alimony?
Scholars of Islam generally claim that it is not permissible for a woman to demand alimony from her ex-Husband except in instances of child support. However, I came across this Ayah in Quran 2:241 that states: > وَلِلْمُطَلَّقَاتِ مَتَاعٌۢ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ ۖ حَقًّا عَلَى ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ > > Reasonable p...

However, according to IslamQA , it is the opinion of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin that this must be given to all divorced women, even if the marriage has been consumated and the Mahr has been given. > Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Maintenance must be given to every divorced women, even after consummation. What is the opinion of the four schools of thought and other classical Islamic scholars on this topic. Is this a one time payment or regular monthly payments akin to alimony in the West.

It is understood by the consensus of scholars that a father may arrange the marriage for his minor son and the marriage is binding on him when he reaches puberty. My question is — who is responsible to pay the dower (mahr) to his wife. The father or the minor son? Ibn Abi Shaybah has posted several opinions in his book , The Book of the Compiler, both of which are contradicting each other. Some scholars say the father, some say the minor son. I would like to know the opinion of the four madhabs and other classical scholars, and what is the most authentic opinion in this regard.

It is generally observed that exorbitantly high mehr/sedaq/alimony are set as the condition for marriage by the bride (or her family who represent her). This thing has the potential to set forth the idea of marriage primarily for the sake of material benefits rather then spiritual ones, coupled with the possibility of breading social wrongs and disrupting it's very fabrics, cynicism etc. Although, the wife has the right to get her alimony. But is it permissible to set forth demands, in the prenuptial, so exorbitantly high that marriage tends to become a cause for bad rather then good? Is there a suggested/advisable alimony that should be demanded?

How authentic is the report of Umar being corrected by a female?
There is a story that goes like this: Once the Second Caliph Umar, Omar bin Khattab told the people to not be excessive in mahr (bride price) and not to exceed four hundred dirhams. A woman protested and quoted Verse 4:20 of the Qur'an which says: >But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything. Would you take it in injustice and manifest sin? Caliph Omar immediately retracted his statement, saying that whoever wants to give an exorbitant mahr can give it. What is the authenticity of this hadith?

I have two marriage contracts with the same person. The first marriage took place in a foreign country with a **lower amount of mehr**, and the second contract was executed in our home country with a **higher amount of mehr**. However, before finalizing the first contract, both parties agreed on the higher amount of haq mehr which is mentioned in the **second contract.** The first marriage contract in the foreign country was happened because the marriage court did not permit a higher amount of mehr; there is a maximum limitation on haq mehr in that foreign country. Both our families also live in foreign countries. We did this to simplify the visa transfer process from the bride's father to the groom. Additionally, at that time, both families could not travel to our home country for other reasons. As a result, the first marriage ceremony occurred in the foreign country, and eight months later, the second marriage took place in our home country. **From an Islamic perspective, I would like to clarify which marriage contract holds validity, whether it is the first or the second.** I agree to pay the amount of haq mehr mentioned in the second marriage.

When the imam asked me when the mehr would be paid my husband answered before i could. And it is due in roughly less than a month. If he has not paid the mehr by said date is our marriage contract still valid? I cant find an answer anywhere. And nothing i find seems to relate to my situation.

After a divorce, does the man still have to pay Haq Maher which was a Saudi Arabia trip?
If a man divorces his wife due to infidelity. And the haq maher agreed at the time of nikkah was a trip to Saudi Arabia. Does this need to still be upheld, what would be the equivalent to have the haq maher paid.

Salam aleykum, I hope you are well. I had my religious marriage (after a civil marriage) with the imam of a mosque. My guardian and my two Muslim witnesses were there. The imam asked us if we had agreed on the dowry; we didn't know how to answer because my husband and I hadn't set an amount, but the imam continued with the ceremony. The day before the wedding my husband asked me how much I wanted as a dowry, I told him we'd see on the day of the wedding but we didn't. Personally, I'm planning to ask for a dowry in the future. Personally, I intend to ask for a simple dowry (according to his means) but my husband doesn't know (we haven't discussed it). My question: Is the marriage valid even if we had no idea of the amount of the dowry while the imam was marrying us? WE will fix ( me and my husband) the amount later. Thank you for your help. Salam aleykum

In a legal marriage a mahr (dowry) is necessary and it can be delayed -even if this was not the usual practice in early days of Islam AFAIK- with different conditions according madhhabs and views. What if one of the spouses died while the husband has not paid his mahr yet. My understanding is that mahr is a due of the husband at least once the marriage was consummated -whatever this may mean-? I'd assume that the dowry would be given the wife if alive (or her inheritors if not) before dividing the heir. What if it is actually the husband who died and the heir doesn't reach the amount of the declared mahr?

Our prophet's cousin and first male Muslim revert, Ali ibn Abu Talib (ruh), was said to have provided a mahr to our prophet's daughter Fatima (ruh) in the amount of 400 Dirhams. I learned this information from our imam but could not verify the source. Since we should follow the example of our prophet (pbuh), Is this information correct, and what would 400 Dirhams from back then be worth today in US $? Please provide sources. Thank you.

I am a recent revert to Islam and was married three months ago to a Muslim man in Morocco. I live in USA. I was visiting the country and also visiting this man and his family to see if we were compatible. There were two witnesses and I had a wali but there was no marriage contract written and no mahr was paid and now I wonder about the validity of the marriage. He swears we are married but I am having serious doubts. I don't want to be married anymore because I think it was done in haste but he says he will not divorce me. I am so confused and scared to death that I will have to live with this situation and never be able to be properly married in the future. There was no civil ceremony and I can make no legal claims as a wife should with regards to financial support or anything. Am I married to him according to Islam? Have I committed zina since we were intimate after that?

I have heard that dowry is not applicable until the bride spends the night with the groom. Is this true?
