Significance of the year of the flood?

I've been studying how the biblical creation & re-creation in Genesis, from Adam to Noah, foreshadows the Exodus. For instance, Noah is of the 10th generation of mankind. The Hebrews were slaves in Egypt for 400 years = 40 x 10 = 10 generations if we assume 40 years per generation. 10 generations of the righteous line appears to represent a certain fullness of time, after which God enacts judgement. Anyways, what I am interested in for this post is the year of the flood (beginning and/or end) and the significance thereof. Genesis is careful to document what year each person was born in, in terms of the age of their father, up through and including Noah. It also tells us that the flood began in Noah's 600th year - and even specifies the month and day. From my calculations, it looks like the flood began in the year 1656 (from creation) and ended in 1657 (from creation). Off hand, I don't see the significance of either number. Yet, why would the author of Genesis be so specific about these dates if there were no meaning to it? Please share your insights :)

Also wouldn't starting with epsilon render the pronunciation of the rest of the word incorrect as in Arabic the second alpha isn't really 'a' it's more of an o and the L's are pronounced differently and the xhi at the end would become silent. Do any major traditions in Christianity hold any sort of formulated doctrine or is there some Biblical justification tossed around that explains God's *a priori* reason for choosing 7 to be significant was? I'm specifically curious about the source of 7's significance, not the how (in other words, I'm not looking for examples of significant 7s (covered in [Why is the number seven special?](https://christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/2001/why-is-the-number-seven-special) and on [Judaism.SE here](https://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/7389/a-natural-explanation-for-the-significance-of-the-numbers-7-and-40/7393#7393)) or for how these play out, but for why God picked the number in the first place.) As I understand it, the significance of the numbers 1 and 3 can both be derived from the Trinity. One God, three Persons. But what is the source of 7? Why God *chose* seven instead of, say, nine. Or five or eleven, which are also primes (in the mathematical system we use). God seems to have chosen 7 to be significant *before* Creation. He chose 7 to be the number of days in a week. This means that any significant 7 post-creation (including the length of a week) is a significant 7 *for the same reason*. Before God created the universe, He picked out 7 to be one of His significant numbers. To clarify a bit further, if God decided that 9 was the number of perfection for whatever reason, then we probably would have had an 8-day work week and the 9th day would be the Sabbath. The number of the beast would probably have been 888 instead of 666. Pentecost probably would have come 82 days after Passover (50 = 7*7+1, 82=9*9+1). If there is truly no source for this and no Christian tradition has forwarded any explanation, the answer may very well be "none". However if more than one doctrine exists, please explain what the different suggestions are and how they end up on different tracks.

The only explanation I can come up with is that the five book of Moses, which has 187 chapters in total, are the knowledge and the wisdom of the hand of G-D and the Holy fire or the burning bush, and any women can't approach the Holy Ark or be in the temple where the Ark is present other than a person who is selected by the Creator. I confess that right after doing it I was a little scared by how easy it was (and of course the meaning it has). I mean, occasionally I've come across articles where complicated mathematical operations are performed to reach certain conclusions. This was not the case. My speculation: When we read of the 144,000 (at 12:4) perhaps this could mean something like a perfect completion of multitudes (?) fitting in with verse 9. Of course, an obvious counter would be "But he specifies 12,000 coming from each of the tribes of Israel." Got it. Yet I wonder if there is still a symbolism going on here. The 12 tribes have corresponding gemstones, as on the high priest's garments -- see Ex 28:21; the gemstones in turn correspond to zodiacal constellations (see, for example, this link ). And it does not seem like too big a stretch to also see those constellations as representative of all nations and tribes and so on, since they circle the earth. My question: Does anyone know of a denomination, school of thought, or theologian holding this symbolic view, or a compatible view?

My step-mother (raised Catholic) was a big fan of *The Bible Code*, but I never knew how to take it. This isn't a reference to the meaning or symbology of the number 7 in the Bible, but instead to the practice of decoding the Bible by applying number patterns to it. Bible Code example I've always considered Numerology to be a practice like Astrology. Is the application of it to the Bible accepted by Christians as another way that God speaks to man, or just more pop-theology?

However, there's always something going on like a 9 day novena or a 40 day fast or a request to return to a particular grotto on the 11th of each month. Then there's other significant numbers like 3 and 7 and 12 which are supposed to mean something and spooky numbers like 6 and 666. So, where is the line between superstition and awe at the way God orders things mightily?
