From Wikipedia :

Does Islam teach that Joseph married Asenath? If so, does that mean he eventually married his mother-in-law? I cannot find this part of the story directly.
**Genesis 41:45 JPS**

Please see story of Prophet Yousuf and Zalikha on www.youtube.com "12:31. So when she heard of their accusation, she sent for them and prepared a banquet for them; she gave each one of them a knife (to cut the foods with), and she said [(to Yusuf]: "Come out before them." Then, when they saw him, they exalted him and cut their hands. They said: "How perfect is Allah ! No man is this! This is none other than a noble angel!" appears to be part of the story
According to some narrations that have been mentioned in the books of Tafseer (commentary of the Qur?aan), Yusuf (Alayhis salaam) did eventually marry Zulekha. (Tafseer Jalaalayn pg.194) askimam.org

I'm reading Sura 12, the narrative on Joseph's life, and I don't think I quite understand the **historical context for why the women at the banquet cut their hands with a knife when they saw how handsome Joseph was?** Was that a cultural custom/expression?
**I also don't understand why Potiphar's wife held the banquet in the first place, and what the function/purpose of it was?**
Can someone help clarify this scene for me?
Thanks!

What is the authenticity of the statement that Yusuf peace be upon him was given (only) half of the beauty?
It seems like common knowledge that the prophet Yusuf was a handsome man. Allah the Almighty says in the surah Yusuf: > So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." It seems like common knowledge that the prophet Yusuf was a handsome man.
Allah the Almighty says in the surah Yusuf:
> So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, **they greatly admired him** and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allah ! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel." 12:31
This verse seems to be the proof for his beauty or handsomeness. https://islam.stackexchange.com/questions/35500/why-did-the-women-in-sura-12-30-31-cut-their-hands-when-they-saw-how-beautiful seems relevant here, however none of the answers give any feedback from tafsir as it seems.
If any tafsir interpret it otherwise I'd be glad to know.
However what I'm asking about is that in this context I often heard a statement saying:
> " Yusuf peace be upon him was given half of the beauty/handsomness "
> يوسف عليه السلام أوتي شطر الجمال
What is the source -e.g. is it mentioned in a hadith?- and authenticity of this statement?

Explanation of Verse 6, Surah Yusuf [12:6]
Verse 5 of Surah Yusuf states: > قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقۡصُصۡ رُءۡيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخۡوَتِكَ > فَيَكِيدُواْ لَكَ كَيۡدًاۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّ۬ > مُّبِينٌ۬ > > He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they > will contrive against you a plan. Verse 5 of Surah Yusuf states:
> قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقۡصُصۡ رُءۡيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخۡوَتِكَ
> فَيَكِيدُواْ لَكَ كَيۡدًاۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّ۬
> مُّبِينٌ۬
>
> He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they
> will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest
> enemy.
Followed by verse 6:
>
> And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of
> narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of
> Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac.
> Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."
Does this mean Yusuf (a.s.) would have received revelation only if he didn't relate his vision to his brothers and if he had related his dream to his brothers, he wouldn't have received the revelation?

Why didn't Yusuf (as) reveal his identity to his brothers from the start?
Why didn't Yusuf (as) reveal his identity to his brothers, when they first came to him? > وَجَاءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُ > مُنكِرُونَ - 12:58 > >And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to the...

From what I understand, he was going to forgive his brothers and wanted to essentially bring his brothers & parents to Egypt, and this perhaps could have been achieved by just revealing his identity at the first instance?
As opposed to requesting that they bring Benjamin, then hiding a cup in his luggage etc.?
Not questioning what happened or whether this was the best course of action. **Just interested to hear what scholars of tafsir/quran have said about this**.
