Was the Imam talking about Barzakh or Day of Judgment?

I read this question . I have often heard the Imam of my local mosque say the following: 1. During Ramdan and on the day of Eid, many people will be released from Hell by the mercy of Allah. 2. Also that, many people who die during a fast will enter Heaven. Does this mean, people (sinners) who have passed away are spending time in Hell at present And good people are already spending time in Heaven? Please provide some clarity. What I understand now is that, during the state of barzakh sinners will be punished by the angels (no to the extend as in Hell) and time will move very slowly for them until Judgment day. For the faithful believers, life in the state of barzakh will be pleasureful (not as pleasureful as in Heaven) and time will move very fast for them such that Judgment day will appear as tomorrow. Based on this, was the Imam actually talking about the mercy of Allah on Judgment day? Or was he talking about the state of barzakh?

From early times, I knew or learned that after death, one would remain in grave (punishment in grave for sins or otherwise) until he/she is resurrected on the **Day of Reckoning**. However, recently I came to know about concept of **Barzakh** (as seen here ) which they say is temporary place after death and one would remain there before the Judgement Day. Question: I have confusion where will we be after death ? **Grave or Barzakh** according to Quran/Hadith ? Thanks in advance.

The soul goes to barzakh, how did Muhammad (saw) see people in Jannah and Jahannam?

However during Isra' wal Miraj, the Prophet (saw) traveled to Jannah and Jahannam. I understand that the Prophets are in Jannah already as there may be an exception for them. However Muhammad (saw) also saw people suffering in Jahannam too. So my question is how or why were there people already in Jahannam when the soul waits in Barzakh after death?

In Islam, what happens to a person after his death?
If a person dies and his/her relatives bury him, he will be asked three questions in the grave. What happens after that? Where does his/her soul go?

Will the soul be punished twice for the same sin? i.e first in barzakh and later in jahanam?
I have read about the punishment of the grave (barzakh) and then later in Hell after Judgement Day. My query is how do these two punishment differ? Will the soul be punished twice for the same sin?

What does Islam say about life after death? There is this article on Wikipedia, but none of it is cited. There is a decent hadith that addresses parts of it on IslamQA , but can't really find anything else. I remember my teachers consistently saying something about everyone being tortured in the grave. Some say that good people who do certain deeds like praying voluntary salat get palaces in their graves. Some say that it is painless, like a dream, and that people will wake up not realizing that they have died (I believe some Quran verses suggest this theory). But there was never any good citation for any of this. So, my question is, what does Islam say about the experience in the grave? Not the part about paradise/hell, but specifically about what happens between death and the day of judgement.
