When I do a Google search for monasteries in Bodh Gaya it gives a lot of search results but if I dig deeper they practise in Thai language. I cannot search for English-speaking monasteries as it retrieves the same search results. Is it necessary to know that or Cambodian or Tibetan to join those monasteries?

Regarding anagarika and monastery life
Does anyone know if becoming an anagarika in a Theravada monastery is only allowed temporarily or could one become a anagarika and stay in a monastery indefinitely? Also what concessions are given to anagarikas in a monastery life.

I am a student from the UK interested in pursuing PhD research focused on Bhikkhuni ordination within Theravada Buddhism. As part of my research, I am seeking information on Theravada Bhikkhuni monasteries located in Canada, the USA, and New Zealand, where fully ordained Bhikkhunis reside and practice. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations or resources regarding these monasteries. I am particularly interested in gaining firsthand experience with Bhikkhunis to enrich my research and inform my future academic pursuits.

Are there any differences between living in a meditation centre vs a monastery?
With all due appreciation for all positive interventions and with apologies for a seemingly dilettantish question, does anyone have any insight on the differences as well as on the commonalities of living long-term inside a meditation center compared to a monastery?

When reading Zen Master Dogen's Shobogenzo it attracted my attention that one of the fascicle postscripts said "Presented to the assembly at the hour of the Rat (midnight)". Given that this was happening during Dogen's time in the 13th century, this late dharma talk would have necessitated the burning of lamp oil and the whole monastic assembly being awake to hear the dharma being expounded. I have also heard from other sangha members that some Zen monasteries have a dinner in the early evening (16-17) which would contrast with the Theravada and Tibetan approaches of not having any meals after noon. Are those aspects of the time schedule considered traditional in Zen monastic life? Is there more material on the subject of the practical everyday aspects of Zen monastic conduct that I could read? Both Soto and Rinzai historical as well as contemporary accounts welcome.

Does using or watching YouTube break a bhikkhu's rules?
Would using YouTube or other social media, where one is exposed to music or forced advertising/entertainment, be breaking the rules for monks? > "the watching of entertainments are stumbling blocks" This makes watching any of YouTube (Number 7 of the eight precepts) an area of concern.

I have a friend from Sri Lanka who is a Theravada Buddhist monk. He is 36 (soon 37) years old and have been a monk for 19 years. He resides in SL and has just finished an english language course and have asked me if I could help find a Buddhist monastery, where he could stay for 2-3 years. His goal is to practice and improve his language skills to eventually be able to give a full Dhamma talk in english. It must a non-Sri Lankan monastery. Bhante would like to work with all Buddhist traditions. If you want to know more about him he has a *FB profile.* He has also written a short description of himself (this description is part of an email that Bhante himself has sent to monasteries - I have taken the self-description-part and put here): >"Dear Venerable sir/madam > >My name is Venerable Buttala Samithawansha and I am 36 years old. I currently reside in a monastery in Colombo Sri Lanka. I am a fully ordained Buddhist monk. > >I grew up as a poor farmer's son and was not able to get my formal education particularly English, however I managed to join the British Council where I completed pre intermediate levels 1, 2 and 3, intermediate levels 1, 2 and 3 and upper intermediate levels 1 and 2. > >I stopped school at 17 years old and was ordained at 18 years old. > >I would be very grateful if you know of any scholarships or funding to facilitate people who are in my situation.I am keen to improve my English skills under guidance on the native English speakers. I would like to share Buddhist teachings in English language in the future. > >My most humble gratitude . > >Yours faithfully, >Reverend Samithawansha" Does anyone know of a Buddhist monastery, where that would be possible? Thank you.

I'm considering spending some time in the future in retreats to have a taste of what monastic life is like. It seems that Theravāda is the current tradition most related and compatible to my moral principles and philosophical ideas. But before spending too money on flight and residence without complete certainty on the differences and traits of schools around the globe, I'd like get enough information. So, as I've written in the title, what are the main differences between schools, lineages, branches and sects in the Theravāda tradition? Also, only if possible -and if it's allowed by the forum's rules-, if you were to go forth, what monastery would you choose, and why? (Just in case, I'm not asking what tradition is better or what is the closest one to the original teachings, because every sect can say that they're the ones). Thanks for your time! Have a nice day!

Renunciation and Negative Mysticism (Escaping from ones Dharma)

May All Beings be Truly Happy! Is it possible that one can see that everything they have tried has failed, in a worldly sense, and has brought about suffering for themselves and others: has been completely selfish in motivation, at most times; and the times when help was extended to others, had little effect on alleviation of any suffering. Much contemplation has been gone into very deeply on this subject. I have found that without Right Loving Understanding, one is lost and is subject to confusion and suffering. So my question is that it seems logical to stop and address ones own suffering, and become free from suffering, so that one can be a beacon of peace and sanity in an insane world: so I am drawn to the monastic life ... but, have been told that this is a path of negative mysticism: that one should be a part of the world, and find time for personal peace while maintaining a householder's responsibilities? I have failed time and again attempting to achieve this goal. It seems that society and the way in which it functions is deeply corrupted. How does one remain uncorrupted unless one is free from it? The most important goal at this point is to be free from suffering so one can be liberated and be of service to humanity. Can this be achieved in a corrupted world? In a future that had a respect for all living things and lived at a humane level of consciousness I could see this being possible.

I attended a meditation event that included morning and evening chanting at a Theravada monastery/temple. It was a wonderful event but I couldn't follow the chanting book as it was written in Lao characters. I recognized some basics like taking refuge and eight precepts, but other than that I was lost. Does morning and evening chanting follow a set pattern or does each monastery just pick out what they like? If it is a set pattern, what might it include? I'd like to print out some in Pali/English if possible. Thanks for any help.
