How do Unitarians interpret John 1:1?

John 1:1 says:
>"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." -KJV
The Greek says:
>Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος
How do Unitarians (those that deny a preexisting Messiah) interpret this verse? If there is more than one, please provide an overview of the various interpretations.
