Assalamu alaykum,
I live in Canada and enjoy outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and camping. In my area, it is quite common to encounter wild animals such as coyotes, bobcats, and even bears. Recently, I encountered a coyote while biking. Last year, I came across a bear cub while camping. While nothing serious happened in either case, I know that such encounters can sometimes turn dangerous in my area.
Given this reality, I’m wondering if it would be permissible in Islam to keep a dog primarily for safety during these outdoor activities. I live in an apartment, so the dog would also be staying with me indoors, though I would try to keep it in a separate area as much as possible.
I understand that in Islam there are specific rulings about keeping dogs, but I would appreciate clarification in the context of living in a non-Muslim country where such safety precautions are considered normal.
