What does اذل and اعز mean in Qur'an 5:54?

Surah Al-Maeda, Verse 54: > يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَن يَرْتَدَّ مِنكُمْ عَن دِينِهِ > فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ أَذِلَّةٍ > عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ... > >O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love >Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers... So if اعز means stern and اذل means humble according to the Qur'an ayah, shouldn't we be asking the opposite? But we usually ask dua as, > اللهم أعز الإسلام والمسلمين، وأذل الشرك والمشركين
