How do I repent from swearing by something other than Allah, without knowing it amounts to shirk?

Three weeks ago, I first heard about the sin of shirk. I read about it, and I found that swearing by anything other than Allah is shirk. I sometimes used to swear by my mother. Can Allah forgive me if I repent?
