Why did St. Peter propose to make different tents at the time of Christ's Transfiguration? (Catholic perspective)

At Matthew 17:4 we hear St. Peter exclaiming at the Transfiguration of Christ: “Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli′jah".
Was St. Peter acknowledging Jesus as a great prophet, rather than as The Redeemer, while he proposed to make three separate tents for Jesus, Moses and Elijah? What are the Catholic Church's teachings on the subject?
