What is meant by, "mild drinks" in D&C section 89?

(Doctrine and Covenants, Section 89:17) What mild barley drinks is this verse referring to? Does this mean Mormons are encouraged to drink non-alcoholic beer? What were they drinking in Joseph Smith's time that is considered good for man according to the word of wisdom?
