Is the soul eternal after it is created?

Is there 'ijma that once a (human) soul is created, it exists forever after that point and is never destroyed? If so, which scholars are known to have claimed 'ijma on this issue? Further, is there any evidence in the Quran or Sunnah that indicate a soul will never be extinguished after its creation?
