Why is the place where prayer leader/imam stands on a lower ground than the rest?

It is usually observed that the position where the imam stands while leading the prayer is lower than the rest of those behind, whom he's leading. Why is it so? And what's the source of this practice? *Lower*, here means a flat and uniform ground (as usual) which is on a lower altitude.
