How exactly is honoring Mary distracting us from Jesus?

In my experience, overcoming my fear of Mary (or my disinterest) was the single biggest boost to my relationship with Christ. And it continues to be. How do Protestants answer Catholics who believe that honoring Mary would actually bring one closer to Jesus? How exactly is honoring Mary distracting us from Jesus?
