Is the history of the Reformation taught as a purely theologically motivated event within the protestant churches?

My question is as it is written. Do Protestants view the Reformation as primarily religious and theological or do they go into more sociological and historic detail? If so which details and to what degree? --- I think church history is something Christians should know, so I am curious about the Protestant church on this matter.
